INFORMATION FOR PARENTS AND CARERS
Placement in residential care and education and secure services.
Children and young people are placed in residential care and education schools and services for a variety of reasons and through different channels. For the few young people who require secure care and education for their own and others’ safety, the decision about placement is determined by the authority of a children’s hearing or by the order of a court. Some children and young people also attend residential special school through the same processes.
Other children and young people are placed in residential care and education when their Local Authority has assessed their needs as requiring support beyond that which the Authority can provide.
In addition, parents and carers have the right to approach their Local Authority and request a placement out with the Authority when they believe their child’s needs can no longer be effectively met in local provision.
